Kiln 8 Steeden plant

Conversion to gas-fired kilns

In addition to the limestone and the kiln type, the fuel used is also decisive for achieving the desired lime qualities. At the Hahnstätten plant, we already use
natural gas only, whereas at the Steeden plant, lignite dust is currently used.

The CO₂ footprint of different fossil fuels varies. For example, fuel-related
CO₂ emissions from producing one tonne of lime with gas are approximately 40 % lower than when using lignite dust.
We have therefore converted our kilns in Steeden to allow the use of gas, so that we can switch to the more climate-friendly fuel, natural gas, depending on
customer requirements and economic considerations.
