For 160 years, we have been a lime producer and supplier with roots in the region, a reliable employer and training company for around 700 employees worldwide, including approx. 40 trainees, and a dependable partner both for our service providers locally and for our customers from all over the world.
Our product portfolio ranges from limestones to calcium oxide and calcium dihydroxide to ready-to-use milk of lime with high chemical purity and precisely defined physical properties. As a specialist for precipitated calcium carbonates, we offer a range of products that have different properties with defined grain structure.

On the trail of hidden deals
Johann Schaefer establishes the company Johann Schaefer Kalkwerke and expands it to become the leading regional lime supplier. In second generation, production is already modernized, and the product portfolio is expanded.
Standing tall through the crisis
The successors of the third generation and their employees succeed with flexibility and perseverance in surviving the challenges of the world wars without major plant shutdowns. The investment in a gas-fired furnace lays the foundation for the company´s focus on quality and secures its competitive position.
How quality can be improved
The continuous expansion of the Hahnstätten plant makes it become one of the most efficient lime plants. The company becomes faster, better and more economical. The start of production of percitipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) adds a major product segment to the company´s portfolio.
Innovations on the advance
Now in its fourth generation, SCHAEFER KALK continues to develop into a supplier of specialized lime products for highest demands. Ready-mixed mortar and PCC slurry complete the product range. The construction of the first GGR kiln in Germany writes lime history.
Step by step to new stature
Extensive restructuring, expansion and modernization are realized at almost all levels of the business. The focus on highest quality, starting from the quarry , is sharpened and supported by the expansion of lab capacities. In addition, the second GGR kiln is built.
All signs point to expansion
SCHAEFER KALK is ready for international expansion. In 1996, the construction of the plant in Malaysia begins as first major step. In the years 2003-2010, SCHAEFER KALK acquires or builds five PCC onsite plants in Europe. 2005 marks the start of the company´s involvement in China.
Today´s fifth generation continues to develop and expand the company. Coated PCC (cPCC) and customized products for water treatment complete the product portfolio. New challenges in securing raw materials, but also the increasing importance of sustainable action - which has always been a matter of course - have also become part of the company´s activities.
Today, the company is excellently positioned to meet the challenges of the future. One of the major ones will undoubtedly be decarbonization. In the next few years, we will have to develop and implement technical solutions for low- to zero-CO2 production.
